Abstract

The article deals with the study of the linguistic aspect of communicative intention. It is specifically concerned with anthropocentric, communicative and pragmatic views on communicative intention. The communicative-pragmatic vector of the study allows examining the communicative intention from the position of its speaker and the hearer, their thinking processes, and in connection with a number of extralinguistic factors of verbal interaction. The speaker in utterances effectively realizes communicative intention, thus representing the character of speech in dialogues. Extensive coverage is given to the study of communicative intention and its linguopragmatic features. The descriptive, contextual and interpretative methods of analysis are used to identify and comprehend the speaker’s communicative intention in verbal interaction. The types of the speaker’s communicative intentions in Patrick White's novel “The Eye of the Storm” are revealed. The informative, stimulating and emotional-evaluating communicative intentions are identified in character’s speech in Patrick White’s novel “The Eye of the Storm”. The order, request, rejection, prohibition are the most common speaker’s communicative intention in Patrick White's novel “The Eye of the Storm”. Pragmatic functions of speaker’s communicative intentions are described in the communicative situations. The article aims to highlight the correlation of stylistic means in the implementation of speaker’s communicative steps in verbal interaction. It is found out that syntactic stylistic means expand, intensify and specify the speaker’s communicative intention in Patrick White’s novel “The Eye of the Storm”. The paper provides the analysis of syntactic stylistic devices in speaker’s utterances to describe the communicative intentions. Nominative sentences, ellipsis, parenthetic units, polysyndeton, enumeration, inversion and distant arrangement of syntactically related units boost the realization of the speaker's communicative intention in character’s verbal communication in Patrick White's novel “The Eye of the Storm”. As a result of quantitative analysis of speaker’s utterances it is found that expressive syntactic means prevail among the stylistic devices in Patrick White's novel “The Eye of the Storm” to realize the speaker's communicative intention.
