LORCA’S METAPHOR AS THE REPRESENTATION OF THE SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PORTRAIT OF THE FEMALE CHARACTERS AND ITS REPRODUCTION IN THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION (ON THE BASIS OF FEDERICO GARCІA LORCA’S PLAYS)

The article deals with the ways of how the social and psychological characteristics of female characters are represented in a metaphor in the three dramatic works of Federico Garcia Lorca (“The House of Bernarda Alba”, “Blood Wedding”, “Yerma”) and the means of its adequate reproduction in Ukrainian translations made by M. Moskalenko and V. Vovk. It points out the main approaches to the study of the metaphor in the diachronic aspect. A particular attention is paid to the gradual expansion of the functionality of the phenomenon of metaphor and its conversion into a cognitive and conceptual instrument which was proposed by American researchers G. Lakoff and M. Johnson. In order to systematize Lorca’s aesthetic views concerning the role and essence of a woman in the context of the Spanish society of the 20th century, a thematic metaphorical concepts are proposed which are based on the main aspects of women’s life in the Andalusian village (Woman is Morality, Woman is Suffering, Woman is Rebellion). Contrastive analysis of translations allows to make a conclusion that the choice of a certain strategy of translation in reproducing a metaphor in artistic discourse is determined by the national specificity of the source and target cultures, the translator’s personal preferences and the specifics of their language.
