REALIZATION OF SPEECH INFLUENCE IN MODERN ENGLISH RELIGIOUS DISCOURSE

The article discusses the realization of speech influence in the modern English religious discourse through the explanatory communicative strategy. The English Protestant sermon served as the material for carrying out the research. Sermon is characterized as one of the genres of modern religious discourse; in particular, peculiarities of the Protestant sermon are ascertained as well as its differences from the Orthodox one are elucidated. Taking into account the achievements of the scholars who were engaged in the study of the strategic organization of the text, the definition of the notion “communicative strategy” is presented. An explanatory strategy is singled out as one of the main ones, according to which speech influence is exercised from the preacher to the recipient, which are the laity, members of the church community. The explanatory strategy is implemented through a series of communicati ve tactics: assertion tactics, inform ation tactics, sermon structuring tactics, argumentation tactics, authority appealing tactics, and exemplification tactics. Communicative tactics of the explanatory strategy are described by analyzing the linguistic mea ns of their expression. Speech influence in the selected tactics is carried out with the help of rhetorical figures and stylistic syntactic means, single lexemes and grammatical structures, through interpretation by means of synonyms, by establishing oppos ition, through comparison. The use of all these means will contribute to a better understanding of the Church dogmas and canons, the problems the lay people face and the ways to solve them. The effective use of the explanatory strategy in the genre of serm on through its tactics can serve a basis for fulfilling the dominant function of the modern religious Protestant discourse converting a person to God and convincing them of the solely correct Christian doctrine. Spreading this teaching among the faithful is that perlocutionary effect the Christian preacher is trying to achieve.
