Abstract

In the article the critical analysis of the various views of scientists on the role and place of corpus studies have been represented. Based on their results, three principal positions have been presented concerning assessment, expediency and prospects of the corpus approach in applied research: 1) radical and sceptical, 2) moderate and balanced and 3) scientific and prospective. The radical and critical views of scientists have been given, in particular N. Chomsky’s, who are convinced of the unreliability of the corpus as a search and research system that reduces to a trivial observation of a large amount of data, and it “is not a method of scientific knowledge and cannot provide either a successful solution of cognitive and practical problems, or the accumulation of new knowledge”. The detailed description of rhetoric sceptics of corpus linguistics has been outlined: on the one hand, believe that only corpus linguistic data lead to the definition falsification of results, and the purely frequency counting of the use of words cannot be a reliable criterion for statements about the features of the functioning of a linguistic object, and on the other hand, do not deny the importance and significance of these methods of processing linguistic phenomena. The cardinally opposite position of optimistic linguists working in the field of corpus linguistics has been presented, in particular V. A. Plungyan’s, who connects the importance of case studies with the development of “corpus dictionaries” and “corpus grammars” of a new generation that contribute to fundamental changes in lexicography, in teaching methods of foreign languages, in translation studies. The advantages of using the corpus in linguistic studios have been revealed, in particular, objectivity, verification, efficiency, representativeness. The arguments have been grounded that the corpus is a theoretical resource and at the same time a tool for machine translation, recognition and synthesis of speech, as well as for the development of programs related to the use of language in various registers.
