UKRAINIANISMS IN ENGLISH CANADIAN LITERATURE (USING THE SOURCE MATERIAL FROM THE NOVEL «KALYNA’S SONG» BY LISA GREKUL)

The article is devoted to the study of borrowings of Ukrainian origin, covering the aspects of their usage in English Canadian literature. The analysis reflects the factors that influence the use of Ukrainianisms, their semantic peculiarities, methods of borrowing and assimilation using the source material from the novel «Kalyna’s Song» by the Canadian writer of Ukrainian origin, Lisa Grekul. Ukrainianisms reflect realities unique to Ukrainian national culture, history, lifestyle, and also function as a marker of Ukrainian national identity, Ukrainianness, which can be understood as one of the aspects of Сanadianness in modern multicultural Canada, as it is related to current research on ethnicity, nationality and multiculturalism in Canadian literature. The Ukrainianness of the main characters of the novel is emphasized by the author using national symbols of Ukraine, as well as Ukrainianisms in the novel. They are analyzed and divided into semantic groups, in particular toponyms, anthroponyms and social vocabulary. The most commonly used Ukrainianisms include the words denoting Ukrainian national dishes, musical instruments, and also anthroponyms. Their phonetic and grammatical assimilation are considered. In the future, attention should be focused on the study of factors that affect the peculiarities of Ukrainianisms usage of in the works of other English-speaking writers of Ukrainian origin, different variants of the English language, their peculiarities in the comparative aspect.
