The article analyzes rhetorical stylistic means based on analogy in the scholarly-critical works written by David Lodge. Stylistic devices aimed at influencing the feelings of the readers play an important role in the convincing process. The scholarly-critical discourse of David Lodge, as a writer, is naturally characterized by a large number of lexical and syntactic stylistic means used as methods of argumentation. The most common stylistic device is based on analogy, which greatly expands the sign potential of the language. During the study it was found out that analogy is often used by the author to substantiate the thesis. The following stylistic means is a metaphor that, in the process of exchanging new information, serves as the "conductor" of communication, through which the author figuratively expresses his opinion and submits it cognitive in a sensual assessment. The metaphor serves to identify and describe new characteristics of objects, to create an image that promotes the interpretation and explanation of the author's idea, and, most importantly, to describe the investigated scholarly-critical discourse, the dominant function of which is the function of influence – functionally focused on attracting attention to author's ideas and persuasion of readers in their truthfulness. Reference has been made to the subject matter of simile which is also effectively used in the argumentation. Due to its ability to make the phenomenon described more clear and understandable, simile traditionally serves as a means of interpretation, explanation, and instruction. Stylistic techniques of metaphor and simile are also based on analogy. In addition to the peculiarity of the analogy of the functions of explanation, interpretation and persuasion, metaphors and similes, vivify the presentation and sharpen reader's perception.
