FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE ICONIC COMPONENT OF A MULTI-CODED LITERARY TEXT

The article is devoted to the study of the visual component functions of a multisemiotic literary text and the peculiarities of verbal and visual interaction in its structure. The texts of British literature of the beginning of the XXI century served the material for analysis. The article has been completed with the realization of general textual tendencies that are characterized by a shift toward a visual way of presenting information in modern fictional texts, the interaction of verbal and non-verbal means, accompanying writing, iconic and paragraphemic design of text in particular. The combination of verbal and non-verbal means of information expression forms a multisemiotic text. This type of text is characterized by greater efficiency in data transmission compared to a purely verbal text due to the use of various channels of information transmission and their flexible structure. While interacting, verbal and iconic means provide integrity, coherence of the text and form its communicative effect. The work analyzes the specifics of the visual component functions (informative, expressive, attractive, aesthetic, illustrative, symbolic, technical, satirical, stylistic, associative, and additive). In the scientific research, it has been established that the use of the visual component of a multisemiotic literary text reflects the individuality of the author's style, gives originality and identity to the text, allows in a certain framework to modify the semantics of the verbal part of the text. The visual component promotes the expressiveness of the text and inclines the reader to the reception and interpretation. The functional load of the visual component is significant: it transmits information, complements and extends the meaning of the text, attracts the attention of the addressee, affects his aesthetic feelings and emotions, causes certain temporal, national and social associations, expresses the addressee’s feelings, creates a humorous effect, replaces the paralinguistic means of oral communication, expresses abstract concepts and ideas, emphasizes the integrity of the complex structure of a multisemiotic literary text.
