The article is devoted to the study of American sports commentary from the standpoint of defining it as a speech genre. The object of scientific research is the sports discourse, focusing on the linguistic and syntactic characteristics of sports commentary which are considered to be related to the genre of sports discourse. Sports discourse is defined as a journalistic text that depicts certain chronological events, characterizes it from different angles, contains the author’s analysis of certain sports phenomena, elements of sports reporting, sports commentary and evaluation of sports events as an important social phenomenon. It has been established that one of the key features of the genre of sports commentary broadcasting is the frequency of providing basic information about players, teams, providing the audience with intermediate results, recent results, best or worst results of a game etc. The article deals with the syntactic simplification (reduction), inversion, heavy modifiers, the use of temporal verb forms, the expression of attitudes and emotions, the evaluation of commenting on sports events. The article defines the role of the commentator as a mediator of a sporting event, in particular, the importance of the author’s opinion has been stressed. The recipient perceives him as a person competent in a particular sport. The commentator evaluates the actions of the coach, the athlete or the whole team, but he remains objective. It has been stated that American sports discourse is characterized by a wide range of nouns and adjectives in ways that are not inherent in English as a whole. Sports discourse is considered to be a unique source of new types of word formation and a favorable environment for identifying various grammatical aspects that have not been used enough in a literary language.
