INCONGRUITY AS A MEANS OF CREATION OF THE DIALECTIC ELEMENT OF SATIRE IN BRITISH MEDIA DISCOURSE

The article characterizes incongruity as a means of creation of the dialectic element of satire in British media discourse. The material for the research includes texts from British satirical magazine Private Eye (2019-2022). To achieve the aim we turned to the general and specific scientific methods such as descriptive analyses, synthesis, generalisation and also the method of discourse analysis and functional pragmatic analysis. Scientific novelty of the research is defined by making the attempts to characterize incongruity as a means creation of the dialectic element of satire in British media discourse and also by distinguishing the key techniques of norm violations on both linguasituational and linguistic levels based on the analyses if the articles from British satirical magazine Private Eye. The article establishes that the dialectic element of satire is created by means of incongruity on linguasituational level through violation of discursive, ontological, logical and evaluative norms, using such techniques as intertextuality, discursive integration, stylistic inconsistency, parody, antithesis, alogisms and shifting of value orientations. Incongruity on linguistic level is created by norm violations on phonological level by means of homophones, onomatopoeias and rhymes, on morphological level by means of acronyms, on lexical level by means of puns, on syntax level by means of violations of syntax rules, on wordbuilding level by means of occasionalisms, neologisms and slang and on phraseological level by means of transformed idioms and fixed expressions. The research analyzes principles of the satirist’s dissociative attitude expression and establishes that incongruity as a means of dissociative attitude expression triggers search for implicitly expressed critical attitude towards the satirical target. Thus, the study concludes that the dialectic element, created by means of incongruity on all language levels, acts as a deceived expectation in British media discourse and helps the reader to recognize initial intentions of the satirist to express critical attitude towards inconsistencies between the ideal and the actual state of affairs.
