ON RENDERING ECONOMIC TERMS: SYSTEMIC AND STRUCTURAL ASPECT

Abstract

The article discusses methods of translating economic terms from English into Ukrainian; suggests a translation analysis of single-component and multicomponent economic terms; proves the complexity of translation due to their structural-semantic characteristics; compares the translational transformation techniques used for conveying a dual nature of English economic terms; describes translation procedures of these terms in relation to their structural and typological properties, quantitative and qualitative characteristics being illustrated in the tables. The article aims at carrying out a comparative and translational analyses of English economic terms, taking into account their structural characteristics. According to the suggested data, the translation of one-component economic terms is usually realized by using the equivalent and variant correspondent, among which word removal turned out the least used method of reproduction. Two-componential terms were subdivided into 3 groups: nominal, adjective-nominal and verb-nominal, most common transformations being identified, i.e. replacement of parts of speech and calquing, whereas the choice of variant correspondence and the word removal were rarely used. The main methods of translating three-component phrases are calquing, permutations, adding and removing words, the choice of variant correspondence being hardly used. Having considered the frequency of transformations application, the percentage of the use of translation techniques of the total number of units under study calculated separately in each group, followed by a contrastive analysis: replacement of parts of speech; equivalent; descriptive translation; adding words; variant correspondence; permutations; word removal; transcoding. To reproduce the English economic terms, Ukrainian was used both lexical (transcoding, descriptive method, tracing, equivalent, choice of variant correspondence, word addition, word deletion), and grammatical (speech parts replacement, permutation) transformations. Such diversity is due to structural, semantic, syntactic differences in the terms of the English and Ukrainian languages. The study also revealed the presence of specific economic terms for the designation of concepts without exact correspondences in the Ukrainian language.
