SEMANTICS AND TRANSLATION OF METAPHORIC UNITS IN THE TEXTS OF AMERICAN PRESS

The article is devoted to the research of the semantic peculiarities of the metaphorical lexical units in the English language. In the course of study the author systematized the scientific works on the research of a metaphor as a lexico-stylistic device. The peculiarities of using metaphors and their semantic meaning in the texts of American press have been characterized. The associative connections in the semantics of the metaphorical lexical units of the analyzed texts of American press have been determined. It has been established that due to the figurative features and expressive characterizes in the semantics of metaphors they represent the problem for translation. Reproducing them it is necessary to render the senses laid in the meaning of the original English metaphor in the Ukrainian text. In this paper the ways of translation of the metaphorical lexical units and specificity of their reproduction with keeping the meaningful figurativeness in the aspect of English-Ukrainian translation have been conducted. The metaphors in the texts of American press includes associative images taken from the different sciences and spheres of life, for example, policy, sport, economy, gastronomy, nature etc. In the study of semantic specificity of the analyzed metaphors, the author detected that some of them derived from historical events and mythology. The analysis shows that in the texts of American press the metaphors are translated by using of the Ukrainian equivalents, calquing, and concretization method. As a rule, the associative meanings in the text of American press have equivalent images in the Ukrainian culture, that’s why the equivalent way of translation turned out to be the most preferable in the sample of our paper.
