Abstract

The goal of the paper is to single out and substantiate the use of the translation patterns of the linguistic means in the attention-keeping positions drawing on the Ukrainian renderings of English headlines. The attention-keeping position related to a predicate or predicative group of the sentences underlying the headline characterizes an entity named in the headline’s attention-attracting position. The goal is achieved by the application of the rhetorical analysis methodology with a special attention to the disposition canon, according to which the referential content of a headline is distributed among the attention-attracting, attention-keeping and nudging positions. The method of contextual analysis is employed to reveal the specifics of the functioning of linguistic means that fill in the attention-keeping positions of the original and rendered headlines. The novelty of the paper lies in singling out and defining the translation patterns of linguistic means in the attentionkeeping positions of BBC News headlines. The paper reveals that the linguistic means in the attention-keeping position in the original are usually rendered according to four main patterns: equivalent; specifying; interpretive; grammaticalized with the latter subdivided into infinitival, terminal, modal, compound and subordinate, as well as syntagmatic entailing two simpler patterns: modal and transitive. Due to the equivalent pattern, the linguistic means in the attention-keeping position of the original are rendered by meaning or interaction of form and meaning. Specification patterns elaborate on the content of the original attentionkeeping position by indicating the categorization levels of referents and detailing the event description. The interpretive model takes advantage of additional linguistic means to illuminate to the Ukrainian readership the actions of the subject by a grammaticalized transitive construction in the target attention-keeping position.
