Abstract

The article analyses the history of Ukrainian photography and touches upon several aspects that have become key factors for the development of photographic art in Ukraine. The research focuses primarily on such important phenomena as social spaces and participatory practices which help to draw a complete picture of the preconditions and development of Ukrainian photography in the first decade of Independence. In this historical period, artists had to unite, so social spaces as environments for certain relationships and their active creation were important for consolidating and uniting artists, and popularising photography as an art. Participatory practices as a model of relationships and the search for collective methods of interaction played a significant role, first of all, in the formation of a new artistic vision and the design of an updated visual language of Ukrainian photography of the Independence era. Thus, the purpose of the study is to analyze the historic analysis of photography of this period through the prism of these two important concepts. The methodological basis of the study is the following methods: cultural, interdisciplinary - to understand the worldview in the context of a specific historical period, historical, cultural and contextual to outline the features of Ukrainian photography in the overall process of development of Ukrainian culture in the first decade of independence. The scientific novelty of the research is that, within the frame of the history of Ukrainian photography of this period, the importance and the role of social space and participatory practices is first proved. This paper analyses various manifestations of creative and social activity of the photographic community, and proves that the 1990s laid the foundation for the further movement of the art of photography, shaped the development of the creative language of most authors whose work will become the embodiment of Ukrainian photography of the first decade of Independence.
