Abstract

The relevance of the study. Among the channels of distribution of rock music, a special place continues to belong to concerts, that have absorbed the entire multitude of currently existing stage practices. The analysis of the artistic synthesis formed by the combination of musical and visual components is of considerable interest. Main objective of the article is to describe some mechanisms of visual image formation in the process of musicians functioning in the specific artistic and communicative situation of a rock concert. The research methodology. An interdisciplinary approach in covering the concert presentation of rock music, which is due to the synthetic nature of this artistic phenomenon, was used. The methods of reflection, qualitative analysis, and generalization, as well as the comparative method, are applied. Results and conclusions. The complexity of the rock concert phenomenon in its creative, organizational, and communicative manifestations was established. It is argued that the visual component is the primary difference between a concert presentation and a studio recording. The significance of a visual component given the dominance of spectacularity in modern culture is noted. The components of the formation of the visual image of a concert are identified. The problem of the “musician on stage” is posed in the context of special requirements for performers, the need to combine the performance of music with stage movement and multi-directional communicative actions. The role of the costume in creating the stage image of rock musicians, the dependence of stage attire on their style preferences is highlighted. Examples of theatricalization of concert performances aimed at a deeper disclosure of musical images are analyzed. By referring to the considerations of musicians and scientists, the potential negative consequences of the predominance of the visual over the musical in a concert are shown. It is noted that the spectacularity of the rock concert had implications for the formation of intermedia connections of rock music, implemented in television entertainment programs and music videos.
