Abstract

The purpose of the work is to investigate the role of art expert examination in determining the value of art objects on the modern art market. The article examines the consequences of the lack of art expertise, the influence of the market environment on expert opinion, as well as the problem of insufficient integration of the practice of connoisseurship with modern methods of technological analysis. The research methodology is based on the application of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, as well as on comparative, structural-functional and sociological methods, which allow to consider art expert examination as a social phenomenon in its interaction with the sociocultural and economic environment. The sociological work of P. Bourdieu and the position of social constructionism of P. Berger and T. Lukman are applied in the work. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the approach to art expert examination as a social institution that plays a significant role in shaping the perception of the value of works of art. The problems of artistic expertise and its relationship with the market environment are first considered from the point of view of the sociology of knowledge. Conclusions. The methods of art expert examination act as a leading tool that forms knowledge about art objects and creates in the public mind an idea of the degree of their value. In the modern art market, in particular in the sector of secondary resale of art objects, there is still insufficient attention to the comprehensive research of works of dubious origin, as well as the use of the opinion of individual experts to create an inflated value of such art objects. The consequence of such actions can be significant financial and reputational losses for both art market participants and individual experts who tend to rely exclusively on intuition and authority, without paying due attention to the application of technological analysis methods in cases that require it.
