LIFE NEEDS OF ELDERLY CITIZENS OF UKRAINE AND POLAND: A COMPARATIVE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH

A constant increase in the number of elderly people characterizes the socio-demographic culture of modern society. Therefore, the state social policy of developed countries is aimed at creating conditions for a dignified life, self-realization, and satisfaction of various interests and needs of citizens in old age. Determining the level of satisfaction with the life needs of older people is one of the necessary conditions for the effectiveness of providing them with social services and building a system of social services for persons of this demographic group. In recent years, the Strategy of State Policy on Healthy and Active Longevity of the Population has been implemented at the regional level in Ukraine. The development and implementation of measures to improve the system of health care and social protection of the population should be based on specific indicators of ensuring the livelihood of citizens and the state of meeting their vital needs. The article presents the results of a study of the characteristics and level of satisfaction of the life needs of elderly citizens in Ukraine and the Republic of Poland from the standpoint of comparative analysis and substantiates the directions for improving their social services in the conditions of the Ukrainian territorial community and the Polish commune. The empirical material was collected using a survey of elderly citizens based on the author's questionnaire, which combined the main blocks of questions for studying the socio-demographic structure of respondents; social activity; diagnosis of needs in the sphere of health care, culture, education; assessments of the availability of social services; the content of thoughts about one's own life. The generalized results of the comparative empirical study are essential for the further study of the life needs of older people and significant for the development of social support for the elderly and the social strategies for such support at the regional level in Ukraine and the Republic of Poland.
