THE IMPACT OF THERAPEUTIC HORTICULTURE ON THE STABILIZATION OF MENTAL HEALTH OF VETERANS

The article is devoted to substantiating the relevance of using therapeutic horticulture in working with veterans. In the process of research, we used the method of analysis of psychological and pedagogical sources on the problem under study, methods of comparison and generalization. The purpose of the article is to determine the impact of therapeutic horticulture on the mental health of veterans. The scientific novelty of the article is that the work analyzes therapeutic horticulture, which consists in the use of gardening and working with plants for medical or rehabilitation purposes to improve the physical, mental and emotional state of people. The therapeutic goals that horticulture performs are identified, namely: emotional, social, physical, cognitive, professional and spiritual. It was determined that the following types of therapeutic gardens can be used for effective work with veterans: 1) horticultural therapy gardens, which are designed to create a calming space for patients; 2) restorative, rehabilitation gardens for people undergoing therapy or rehabilitation; 3) sensory gardens, which are designed for sensory stimulation of the senses; 4) memory gardens, which help evoke memories; 5) community gardens, which encourage communication and interaction between participants. A positive aspect of the use of horticulture in working with veterans is revealed, namely: spending time in nature reduces the risk of physical health disorders, in particular, there is a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, helps strengthen muscles, increases endurance. Performing gardening tasks has a psychotherapeutic effect for veterans. This is manifested in the relief of emotional pain and confusion; increasing self-esteem and self-worth; creating healthy coping mechanisms, etc. Also, horticulture combined with physical therapy has been shown to improve coordination and balance, fine and gross motor skills, and independent living skills in veterans after injuries and amputations.
