SYNTACTIC PECULIARITIES OF PESSIMISTIC UTTERANCES

The article highlights the syntactic peculiarities of pessimistic utterances. It has been revealed that pessimistic utterances are represented within the syntactic context by simple and complex sentences (according to the structure), and declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences (according to the purpose of the utterance). It has been found out that the typical syntactic models used to form pessimistic utterances are declarative and interrogative sentences in which the category of modality is realized. The syntactic models in which modality is realized through modal verbs, modal words in the function of a parenthesis, and verbs with the modal meaning, indicate uncertainty, negative expectations, doubts, indecision, frustration, despair and hopelessness of the speaker. The syntactic models in which modality is realized through the conditional mood, indicate hopelessness, negative expectations, disbelief, distrust, fear, doubt. Among the typical syntactic models that form pessimistic statements, there are syntactical structures that indicate doubt, indecision, uncertainty about the future events. The situationality of the expression of a pessimistic worldview is realized by the syntactic structures, indicating the actual time of the action. It has been proved that elliptical questions reproduce the emotional state of the pessimistic speaker and point to his/her inner emotions, disbelief in the future, and skepticism. It has been found out that special questions which are used to form pessimistic utterances take the form of question clichés with the fixed structure and semantics. Disjunctive questions that point to the pessimism of the speaker serve to express uncertainty and indecision. It has been suggested that any sentence, pronounced with proper intonation and punctuated by the exclamation mark, may function as a pessimistic utterance. The limitation of pessimistic utterances represented by separate sentences, within the framework of a particular situation, is the basis for the speech realization of situational pessimism and pessimism as an attributive style.
