AUTHENTIC SCIENCE-POPULAR VIDEO SEGMENTS AS A MOTIVATOR TO PROMOTE LINGUOCULTURAL COMPETENCE AMONG YOUNG LEARNERS

Abstract

The article deals with the teaching technique that involves authentic video segments at the English lessons at primary school. The strategy of using authentic video segments as a part of teaching and learning activities has been determined by the requirement to promote the quality of teaching English at primary school in general and increase linguocultural competence in particular. Linguocultural competence is treated as the students’ ability to apply their knowledge concerning national culture, which is embodied in the national language and comes into play in the process of communication, especially across cultures. The beneficial feature of the strategy involving authentic video segments boils down to the exact demonstration of a foreign language in terms of immersion into any real situation that represents language interaction and real interlocutors, who are native speakers. A set of visual encoded extralinguistic features accompanies any authentic video segment and highlights the intensity of communicativeness. Authentic science-popular video segments from the channel on YouTube «Kids Educ – Kids Educаtionаl Gаmes» have been applied. They are favourable to use while they are grouped thematically to illustrate the spheres of Science; Plаnts; Geometric Shаpes; Environmentаl Skills; Plаnets, Solаr System, Moon; Аnimаls; Heаlth; Geogrаphy; Colors; Аlphаbet, АBC Songs; Mаthemаtics, Аlgebrа, Geometry, Аrithmetic; Lаnguаge Аrts, English Grаmmаr, Literаcy Lessons. The set of drills to accompany video segments has purposefully been prepared and its value has been tested and estimated at the English lessons at primary school. Such credibility has been caused not only by visual displaying of the information and facts but also by the simulation of educational environment comprising colour and audio sensation which manipulate the emotions and promote profound memorizing and storing linguistic data. The essential requirement of video segments’ involvement is the regular completion of tasks geared to develop cognitive, analytic, evaluative, and creative skills.
