THE PROTOTYPE OF SHAKESPEARE’S DARK LADY IN THE FOLKLORE: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTERS

This article deals with the similar probable historical and folkloric prototypes of the Dark Lady (William Shakespeare) because of similar heroines in folk ballads. Cultural and contextual aspects are given. Because of the limit of this article the research compares the selected translations of the sonnets XXVII and CXXX (translated by S. Marshak and D. Palamarchuk), which the lexemes denote epithets are marked. Also own translations of these poetic works are proposed. The characters of the Dark Lady and the heroine of the ballads are compared with the title character of the poem by Lesya Ukrayinka “Isolt of White Hands”. The analyzed selected English folk ballads from the collection of Francis James Child are translated into Ukrainian language. For context, there are given the facts of superstitions (mainly British) related to non-standard image, and the same motifs of folk tales. The reflection of Celtic motifs in the poem of Lesya Ukrainka and the analyzed ballads illustrates the ambivalence of the image of the swarthy (“brown”, “dark”, “dun”) and dark-haired heroine. There is a hypothetical unconscious interaction of Shakespeare's sonnets feminine narratee and the character of the analyzed poem by Lesya Ukrayinka. The linguistic, poetological, comparative, historical and biographical, intermedial analysis are involved. The attention to the etymology of the English and Gaelic lexemes is paid.
