INTERPRETATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN WORLD SCIENTIFIC OPINION AND ITS EXTRAPOLATION TO UKRAINIAN MUSICOLOGY

Music is one of the means of forming national-mental attitudes, therefore, the analysis of the interpretation of the phenomenon of national identity in world scientific thought and the extrapolation of the specified knowledge into Ukrainian musicology is an important task that must be solved both in the theoretical and, in the future, in the practical sphere. The aim of the article is to clarify the main ideas about national identity in world scientific opinion using the example of studies by Anthony Smith (1994), Vincent Decombe (2015) and Montserrat Hibernau (2012) for further extrapolation into Ukrainian musicology. The research methodology is reflected in the following tasks: 1) 1) consider the situation of the study of national identity in Ukrainian musicology; 2) to analyze the most important ideas from world humanitarianism, related to the problem of national identity; 3) draw conclusions about the essential features of national identity, declared in world scientific opinion, and extrapolation of the specified knowledge into Ukrainian musicology. Scientific novelty. The article, along with the expression of certain ideas of Anthony D. Smith (Anthony Smith, 1994), Vincent Descombes (2015) and Montserrat Guibernau (Montserrat Guibernau, 2012), related to the subject of the study, brings information about the works of Peter Wade (1998), Cecily Morrison (2003), Anthony Arblaster (2002), Raymond Knapp (2006, 2009), Ilir Ramadani (2017), a number authors of articles from the collection «Music, National Identity and the Politics of Location: Between the Global and the Local» (2016) and others. Conclusion. The conducted analysis gives reasons to claim that the study of the national identity problem finds more and more multiple explanations in Ukrainian musicology. The reasons can be seen in two main features of this phenomenon. First, it is a close relationship with culture, with the process of realizing one’s belonging to one or another national-cultural group, which, in turn, uses a certain musical and symbolic thesaurus. Secondly, the importance of the identity problem for modern Ukraine, which was declared when determining the relevance of the problem raised in this publication.
