The study is dedicated to the genre of impromptu in the works of F. Chopin, its stylistic features, structural characteristics, and performance interpretations. The paper examines the historical development of the genre, its connection with Romanticism, and the place of impromptus within the overall context of the composer’s creative legacy. The impromptu genre, which emerged during the Romantic era, combines improvisational elements, lyrical expressiveness, and a chamber character. Its predecessor was F. Schubert, whose impromptus followed a three-part form with contrasting sections and a reliance on specific pianistic techniques. F. Chopin further developed the genre by enhancing its harmonic flexibility, refined melody, and delicate texture. His impromptus incorporate features of nocturnes, études, and ballads, making them particularly interesting for analysis and performance interpretation. Despite the relatively small number of works in this genre, Chopin’s impromptus have become iconic in piano artistry and have gained wide recognition among performers. The study includes a comparative analysis of the interpretations of Chopin’s impromptus performed by Evgeny Kissin and Claudio Arrau. Significant differences in their approaches have been identified: Kissin emphasizes precise articulation, detailed textural work, dynamic nuances, and minimal pedal use, ensuring a transparent sound. In contrast, Arrau favors smoother phrasing, extensive pedal application, and a soft, velvety timbre, creating a subtle impressionistic quality. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the performance specifics of Chopin’s impromptus and their role in the evolution of piano art. Future research directions include analyzing the interpretations of other pianists, exploring the impact of impromptus on subsequent generations of composers, and examining phrasing, dynamics, and pedaling within different performance traditions. Additional value lies in investigating the connection between impromptus and other genres in Chopin’s works, as well as their influence on shaping modern performance approaches.
