Abstract

The article thoroughly investigates the role of military chaplains in social work with service members and their families in the context of the war in Ukraine, caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion. Social work with military personnel acquires particular significance due to the complex challenges associated with the physical, psychological, and social conditions of service members and their families. Special emphasis is placed on the contribution of the Military Chaplaincy Service, which not only provides spiritual support but is also actively involved in addressing the moral-psychological and social problems faced by military personnel and their loved ones. An analysis of recent studies and publications indicates that military chaplains play a key role in interdisciplinary collaboration with social workers and psychologists, providing comprehensive support to service members. The experience of other countries, particularly the USA and the UK, confirms the effectiveness of such collaboration in the rehabilitation and adaptation of military personnel after combat operations. Chaplains serve as spiritual mentors and trusted individuals whom service members approach during critical moments, helping them overcome stress, psychological traumas, and facilitating their reintegration into society. The aim of the article is to study and analyze the contribution of military chaplains to military-social work in Ukraine, as well as to define their role in the system of social support for service members and their families. The main content includes a historical overview of the development of military chaplaincy in Ukraine, an analysis of legislative changes, particularly the adoption of the Law of Ukraine «On the Military Chaplaincy Service,» and the results of a pilot survey of military chaplains regarding current issues and challenges in their activities. As a result of the study, it was established that military chaplains are important intermediaries between service members, their families, and social services, facilitating the integration of various forms of support. A need was identified for enhancing the qualifications of chaplains, expanding their collaboration with other specialists, and improving resource provision.
