THE CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS OF TRANSLATING MUSICAL SCORES FROM FILMS

Abstract

This article describes the challenges and the translation methods used to translate the lyrics of a film’s musical score. During our research, we used various methods of working with the information described in the features of the lyrics and how that related to the whole musical score and to the film. We paid special attention to the theory of translation in the scientific literature, its types, various scientific classifications and features. Each style of translation was considered before applying literary translation as the most appropriate. We highlighted the translation of lyrics as a special type of literary translation and determined that it was necessary to separate these concepts in the translation literature. The most common problems encountered by the translators, when working with the lyrics of the musical score were identified, as were the most expedient approaches to overcome these difficulties. A detailed description of the qualities that a translator of films who works with a musical score should possess was discussed. In the implementation of our research, we analyzed the translations of two songs from theoretical and practical points of view, and outlined the uniqueness of the translation of lyrics in the musical score of films in the practical application of theoretical knowledge. We also analyzed the current trends in the development of the translation of the lyrics in the musical score of films.
