Abstract

The article is devoted to a theoretical review of the emergence and formation of the term posttraumatic growth as a new and promising area of psychological research that emerged in the middle of the XX century. The content and features of the first studies of posttraumatic growth after traumatic events and disasters are revealed. The interchangeable concepts and terms used by researchers until the term posttraumatic growth by R. Tedeschi and L. Calhoun became commonly used. Arguments are presented why the term posttraumatic growth is the most optimal and best reflects the phenomenological essence of the phenomenon. The existing theoretical models of the phenomenon of posttraumatic growth are analyzed, namely: the functional-descriptive model of R. Tedeschi and L. Calhoun; personality-centered model of S. Joseph; biopsychosocial model of M. Christopher. It is emphasized that the most complete in terms of components is the functional-descriptive (descriptive) model of R. Tedeschi and L. Calhoun, according to which posttraumatic growth is described not just as a process of returning to the previous level of functioning after trauma, but as a qualitative transformation of the personality and a process of deep self-improvement as a result of cognitive reassessment of the initial pre-traumatic beliefs and reconstruction of one's own ideas about the world. These personal transformations are observed in changes in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and changes in the philosophy of life.
