Abstract

The growing need to preserve and restore the mental health of Ukrainians requires the development and implementation of psychometric tools capable of determining the priority areas of psychological interventions and evaluating their results. The Interpersonal Problem Inventory is one of the world's most popular tools used before, during, and after therapy; it has proven efficacy across cultural, age, and clinical samples. The aim of the work is to adapt the tool into Ukrainian and create its abbreviated (screening) version. Two studies were conducted. 786 respondents aged 17–70 took part in the first, 79% of whom were women. The factor structure of the methodology was analyzed, the statements for the screening version were selected, and the psychometric properties of the newly created instrument were checked. The second study (179 participants) was aimed at checking the stability of the factor structure and retest reliability of the technique. The results of the first diagnostic section showed the need to revise the content of the methodology to ensure compliance of its factor structure with the original theoretical model. The data ipsatization procedure made it possible to obtain the expected circumplex structure from four bipolar dimensions (the eight factors that make up the subscales of the technique explained 70% of the total variance of the variables). The scales of the screening version of the IIR-16 have a high or satisfactory level of internal consistency and homogeneity, except for the subscales "Difficult to be persistent" and "Difficult to be involved". Indicators of interpersonal problems are correlated with evaluations of the functioning of the interpersonal sphere and the psychological well-being of the individual, obtained with the help of other questionnaires: social distance, search for emotional support, dependent decision-making style, trust in people and the world, etc. All this allows us to conclude that the screening version of the Interpersonal Problems Questionnaire IIR-16 is a reliable, valid and informative tool that can be recommended for use in counseling and psychotherapy.
