Abstract

The article presents a theoretical analysis and empirical study of the features of the psychological phenomenon of personality helplessness. The study of helplessness began in the middle of the last century in foreign psychology, but today there is a growing interest in this problem among Ukrainian scientists. The study of this psychological phenomenon is extremely relevant in modern realities, characterized by social instability, an increase in the level and duration of stressful influences associated with the war, which has been going on for more than one year in our country. Psychodiagnostics of helplessness is a complex process, since it is defined as a multi-component integral personality formation that has manifestations at the cognitive, emotional and motivational levels. In order to identify its features, we have chosen a number of methods for diagnosing its following components: attributive style, locus of control, self-esteem, level of claims, emotional state. The results of the diagnosis showed the predominance of average indicators according to all methods. Also, a significant number of respondents have a high level of pessimism, a low level of internality, some of the studied are characterized by a low level of motivation to achieve success, and a third of the students are characterized by passivity and a negative emotional state. Which gives grounds to assert that such students have a high level of helplessness. The results of the correlation analysis showed a number of significant relationships between the studied indicators, in particular: between the indicators of the attributive style and the need for achievement, activity and mood; between the general indicator of internality and its individual manifestations and the need for achievement and activity. Such results may indicate that individuals with high manifestations of helplessness indicators are characterized by an external locus of control, which is associated with a low need for achievement and passive behavior and pessimistic attribution.
