GALICIAN NAPIV (CHANT) AS A PHENOMENON OF UKRAINIAN CHURCH MONODIC SINGING

Abstract

The relevance of the problem is stipulated by the demand for the study of church singing traditions in the context of the development trends of the domestic spiritual singing worship culture, in particular – the church singing tradition of Galicia and Volyn, represented by the artistic phenomenon of the Galician (or Galician-Volyn) napiv (chant) as a token of ancient Ukrainian Orthodox monodic singing. The Galician napiv (chant) is a system of local versions of liturgical hymns of the Orthodox Church that was historically formed in the Galicia-Volhynia lands and includes various hymn-graphic groups. We have not found any special studies devoted to the research of this phenomenon. The outlined scientific problem corresponds to the urgent tasks of modern musicology (musical regionalism) and determines the prospects of a more focused study of the Galician napiv (chant). The purpose of the present scientific article is to characterize Galician (Galician-Volyn) napiv (chant) as a phenomenon of Ukrainian church monodic singing. The research methodology is based on the combination of historical, phenomenological, genre, stylistic, structural and functional scientific approaches. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is related to the development of the author's methodology for the analysis of samples of the Galician napiv (chant), taking into account their specificity, with further testing on a specific example. The Conclusions summarize the results of a holistic analysis of the Galician song-chant «Dostoyno est» of the Galician napiv (chant) noted by Isydor Dolnytskyi in «Napivnyk tserkovny» (Lviv, 1894), according to the proposed model of analysis (figurative-semantic, musical-stylistic, compositional-dramaturgical levels). The genesis of the verbal text and its functioning in the liturgical practice of the prayer «Dostoyno est», the musical and stylistic (melodic, harmonic, metrerhythmic) principles and basis of form creation, taking into account the dramaturgical processes of «Dostoyno est» of the Galician napiv (chant), have been highlighted.
