Abstract

The article focuses on the pedagogical heritage of the famous teacher-practitioner. the author of school textbooks, public educational and cultural figure Omelyan Popovych in the context of the development of the New Ukrainian School. The relevance of his didactic ideas in teaching the native language of younger schoolchildren, which have not lost their significance at the modern stage, the diversification of principles, methods and forms of learning and the organization of the educational process in primary school are substantiated. It has been proven that the leading principles of language education are the enrichment of students’ vocabulary based on the study of works of fiction, the activation of the development of schoolchildren’s thinking and speech, real situations of communication, and the principle of connecting learning with life is important among them. We consider O. Popovych’s considerations regarding the use of experimental, practical teaching methods, which are consistent with modern design, information and communication technologies, to be relevant for modern realities. The expediency of the creative use of O. Popovych’s pedagogical ideas in the training of a modern primary school teacher, the creation of new generation textbooks for younger schoolchildren has been revealed. Thus, according to the teacher, school textbooks should take into account the age characteristics of children and be written in an understandable, accessible to them literary Ukrainian language, built on local history material, implementing national education. The properties of the teacher’s personality (personal, professional, moral and ethical) are substantiated, which are consistent with today’s requirements and form the basis of the professional standard «Teacher of primary classes of general secondary education institutions». The purpose of the publication is to substantiate the expediency of implementing the pedagogical ideas of O. Popovych in the educational process of a modern elementary school and training future teachers of elementary grades of general secondary education institutions in the conditions of today’s challenges. The educational potential of the teacher’s literary work in the formation of the national consciousness of the growing personality is determined by the prospects of further research.
