TOWARDS THE ISSUE ON DETERMINING THE CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING THE QUALITY OF A TEXTBOOK ON LEGAL ENGLISH

An important aspect of prospective legal professionals’ foreign language training is the proper educational and methodological support for respective disciplines, which ables to take into account both modern needs of Ukrainian legal practice and the latest approaches to teaching a foreign language for specific purposes. The aim of this study is to determine the criteria for assessing the quality of a textbook on legal English. The paper states that a quality textbook should reflect the methodological system of the teacher (teaching), the system of student activities (learning) and the content of teaching/learning (study material). The author substantiates that the textbook on legal English is characterized by both macrostructure, the main components of which are the introductory part, thematic sections, grammar guide, bilingual glossary and microstructure, which consists of exercises and tasks of different types, as well as nontextual illustrative materials. The main focus of the study is on defining the criteria for assessing the quality of a textbook on legal English. In the article the quality of the textbook is seen as the system of mutually reinforcing components that ensure the implementation of the main functions of the textbook and help students achieve the necessary learning results of education. The paper substantiates that the criteria for assessing the quality of a textbook on legal English should measure its ability to achieve the main objectives of foreign language teaching for professional communication, namely practical, educational, cognitive, developmental, social and sociocultural. In the article, the author also considers the implementation of the outlined criteria on the example of Legal English through the Prism of the Law of Ukraine Training Manual. The author states that the aspects considered in this paper can serve as a basis for the development of a comprehensive textbook for teaching legal English.
