Abstract

This article examines the results of a research conducted in the period from May to July 2022 regarding the attitudes of early adults on the phenomenon of calling and its aspects, in particular, the need for awareness and realization of a calling, the period of awareness of a calling, its impact on the quality of a person's life, the conditions suitable for awareness and realization, the nature of the results obtained both for the person who pursues the calling and for society in general, etc. With the help of the conducted research, it was found that Ukrainian respondents look at calling through the prism of six categories: ‘Function’ – 29.7%, ‘Process/Result’ – 24.8%, ‘Affect’ – 22.9%, ‘Motive/Value’ – 11.8%, ‘Abilities/Skills’ – 5.4%, ‘Soul’ – 5.4%. Each of the categories contains a number of subcategories, which made it possible to reveal more deeply the peculiarities of the attitudes of people of early adulthood regarding calling and to reveal the patterns of interpretation of this phenomenon. The views of Ukrainian respondents regarding a number of important issues related to calling were also studied. Which made it possible to understand that Ukrainians are more focused on self-realization, the realization of their own potential, rather than on positive results for other people or society in general. Thanks to the results obtained from the research, it was possible to compare the attitudes of persons aged from 21 to 30 years and from 31 to 40 years. A clearly expressed tendency among the representatives of the first group is to attach great importance to social conditions when pursuing a calling, whereas the second group, in comparison with the first, did not attach such importance to these conditions. Another important stage of the research was the comparison of the obtained results with similar results of studies already conducted in Ukraine and abroad. This made it possible to reveal some peculiarities of the perception of calling by Ukrainian respondents, in particular, the frequent use of the word ‘soul’ in relation to the interpretation of the concept of «calling». The tendency of the influence of culture on the understanding of calling is also noticeable, in particular, for Chinese students it was important to use the concept of duty in relation to calling, as well as collective expectations from relatives and friends.
