Abstract

The article highlights the problem of formation of professional competencies of future primary school teachers through the use of thoughtful reading of scientific texts as a means of teaching. This problem is of great interest in modern realities, since the reading and textual competencies of the future teacher make up a wide range of knowledge, skills, abilities related to writing, perception, understanding of scientific texts; interpretation of information, ways of its processing. The work is aimed at revealing the practical significance of the cross-cutting ability to read thoughtfully, finding effective means of forming professional competencies of future primary school teachers. The results of research by Ukrainian scientists indicate certain problems with the quality of reading, which is a basic skill for becoming a person in the profession, his life progress, and solving life challenges. Taking into account the purpose and objectives of educational and professional training programs for higher education applicants in the specialty Primary Education, the authors’ understanding of thoughtful reading of scientific texts as an integrated professional ability of a future teacher, which combines the skills of a future teacher to use the cross-cutting ability to read (navigate in the structure of a scientific text; perceive it holistically; understand its content to the fullest (work out scientific terms and unfamiliar words); isolate scientific information; understand logical and cause-and-effect relationships in the text; reflect on the content and form of the scientific text) and enrich their own professional, life, intellectual, social experience as a basis for full self-development and participation in the life processes of education development. The aim of the article is to study the process of using thoughtful reading of scientific texts by higher education students as a means of forming professional competencies of future primary school teachers. The authors believe that thoughtful reading of scientific texts is a means of forming professional competencies in higher education applicants, since a scientific text is 1) a source of knowledge in which the information received from the teacher is itemized, expanded, explained in depth; 2) the object of study and research; 3) can act as an “intermediary” between the applicant and the processes taking place in education. A set of research methods was used in the research: general scientific (analysis, synthesis, abstraction); empirical (observations); a pedagogical experiment in which methodological guidelines are presented, which can be the basis for creating a set of creative tasks for mastering the thoughtful reading of scientific texts by applicants for higher pedagogical education. In the process of developing creative tasks for the formation of thoughtful reading of scientific texts, it was taken into account that reading is a process not only of perception, but also of the formation of independent thoughts, inferences, conclusions; The effectiveness of the process of using thoughtful reading by higher education students largely depends on the teacher’s ability to convince students of the value of the relevant cross-cutting skill, on the successful choice of teaching tools.
