MANIFESTATIONS OF TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES IN ADULT ATTACHMENT

Abstract

Objective. The proposed article provides a theoretical review of existing psychological theories on attachment trauma and presents the results of empirical studies of the manifestation of traumatic childhood experiences in adult attachment. Methods. The theoretical part of the work was based on a comprehensive review of psychological theories on attachment trauma. Attachment trauma is a well-known clinical heuristic in psychology. However, different views on it have emerged in psychology, which has led to some heterogeneity in its interpretation and understanding. Therefore, in this article, we have provided a theoretical overview of the problem based on traditional attachment and trauma research. Based on the theoretical research and generalizations, we developed a program for empirical testing of the identified provisions. The validity and reliability of the results were ensured by the scientific and methodological validity of the study, the use of methods adequate to the tasks and the representativeness of the sample. Results. Attachment theory is a powerful framework for understanding relationship regulation. It is particularly valuable for understanding the impact of traumatic childhood experiences on adult attachment. In this article, we explore the role that attachment orientation plays in shaping interpersonal transactions within close relationships. Drawing on existing psychological research, we offer new insights into how people with different attachment orientations may trust, experience loneliness, and perceive the quality of their own close relationships. We have found that relationships have a positive impact on both partners, regardless of their attachment style, and are a source of development and resource for them. At the same time, relationships are important for adults for many reasons, as they play a key role in physical, emotional, social, and psychological well-being.
