The concept of the New Ukrainian School envisages the use of an activity-based approach to learning. It is characterised by the organisation of the educational process in such a way that students do not receive ready-made knowledge immediately, but acquire it in the course of their own learning activities. In this approach students are active subjects of learning activities, not passive observers. Students have the opportunity to master different methods of cognition, develop critical thinking skills and learn to solve problem situations using theoretical knowledge. Primary school age is characterised by increased curiosity about the environment. Children seek to satisfy their cognitive needs. At the same time they retain an interest in play. Play continues to be an important element of their development, helping to develop social skills, imagination and creativity. The educational process during this period should be organised in such a way as to combine elements of play and learning, promoting active learning and the development of personal qualities, as the students learn by playing. Today LEGO-technologies are becoming more and more popular. LEGO-technologies is a method of teaching in which students gain certain knowledge by building and studying models from the construction set. In such a way learning through action takes place. These technologies are easy to use, they are universal and characterised by high technical and aesthetic features. The article analyses the definition of the concept of reading competence; defines the structure and content of primary school students’ reading competence; describes the essential characteristics of LEGO-technologies as an active educational tool.
